"Game of Demise"
by Taylor Colbert

"I hear the branch snap.
I hear the leaves crunch.
The birds go silent, the squirrels
grow still.
I halt in my position, holding vast to my bow.
My arrow is placed, ready to spring.
My heart beat increases,
fearing the moment.
Will I shoot now? Will I wait a moment?

I hear their voices, they make
no attempt to stay silent.
I steady my aim, regain my posture.
I feel hollow and nervous.
I'm alive, just a dead man
walking.
The first face I see is the strongest.
He's the one who has to go.
Then I see the first girl,
she's small, but lethal, holding
tightly to her knives.

But I'm unprepared, for who I see next.
He was not supposed to be here.
His blond hair I see first, just before
his blue eyes.
His stocky build couldn't go
un-noticed. But why would
he go with the ones who want me dead?
Does this prove all I suspected?
Before I know it, I've been spotted.
Now I'm taunting and climbing.

With their choice to wait me out,
I know that I have to put on
a good show. Because I know
this is my end.
My natural choice is now my demise.
So with a final decision, a warning to Rue,
I drop the nest of a deadly promise.

And before I know it, there he is.
The boy with the bread, saving me again.
He rushes me away, weapon in hand.
I'm not sure if it's the stings killing me,
destroying me.
But I know I have to trust him. It's nothing but
required. And as the days pass, I think of him.
Surely he's dead, and it's just me again…"
Inspired and based off of The Hunger Games.
